Applying for an Australian work visa

Kerdo Legal can help you get a skilled (or working) visa whether you are in Australia or overseas.

We can let you know which occupations Australia needs, and what you need to do to get a work visa.

It is a really complex process, but here is a summary.

There are two main types of skilled visas: temporary skilled visas and permanent skilled visas.

If you are granted a permanent skilled visa, you can:

  • bring your family with you;
  • stay in Australia indefinitely (with some requirements);
  • work wherever you like;
  • access education for yourself and your family;
  • buy a home or property;
  • access government provided medical services,

and much more!

The permanent skilled visas are the subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa and the subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa.

Are you eligible for a subclass 189 permanent visa?

  • The first step is to see whether what you do for a living in a Occupation in Demand in Australia. You can find this here. This list changes regularly, so make sure you are looking at the most up to date list. (Contact us to make sure).If your profession or trade IS on this list, you MUST have proof. You must be able to provide all your certificates and evidence of job experience.
  • The next step is to apply to an assessing agency for an independent assessment. You can find the contact details for the main skills assessment bodies here.
  • You may need to have an assessment of your level of English. The level of English you need depends on your profession. For example, you will need to show a high level of English if you are a Doctor or Nurse. See more about what “competent English” means here.
  • Once you have all your paperwork, you lodge an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. You then need to WAIT until you are invited to apply for a 189 visa. There is no time frame for when you may be contacted, but each Expression of Interest only lasts 2 years. You can apply for the 189 outside Australia and must wait for the invitation before you can lodge an application. You can ONLY apply for this visa in Australia if you are on another temporary visa that can last for as long as it takes for you to get an invitation for the 189 and make the application.
  • When you get an Invitation to Apply, you make the actual application for the subclass 189 visa. You will need to complete health and police checks.

The process can be confusing, but we are experts in Australian Immigration Law and visas, and we can help you know EXACTLY what you need to have and to do to apply for a skilled visa.
